Giants and Doliones.—The Argonauts now pursued their voyage, till contrary winds drove them towards an island, inhabited by the Doliones, whose king Cyzicus received them with great kindness and hospitality. Though their existing danger and want of Athenian support was now urgent, it had not been brought upon them in an unjust quarrel, or by disgraceful conduct: they had proposed to Corinth a fair arbitration respecting Epidamnus, and their application had been refused,–which showed where the right of the case lay; moreover, they were now exposed single-handed, not to Corinth alone, whom they had already vanquished, but to a formidable confederacy, organized under her auspices, including choice mariners hired even from the allies of Athens. In the prosecution of this unpopular design, he advanced, however, by cautious and well-weighed steps.

The example of Cornelius the Centurion supplies a sixth argument in favor of this opinion. It was among ledges of rock looking into the ravine beyond which were Stuart and Early. “Charming, charming!” observed Prince Vasíli.
